Visiting the Basque Country

Spain is a country with many regions, so what it is important to understand before visiting it is that each region comes with something unique and spectacular that can’t be found anywhere else in the country. A very good example for this is the Basque Country, a Spanish region that is of particular interest for tourists due to the fact that it has a completely autonomous culture; it even has a language of its own, one that has very unusual and quite mysterious origins. Today, the Basque Country is one of the industrialized regions in Spain, despite the fact that there are vast territories untouched by the human hand, territories where the nature managed to preserve its original aspect and to protect its animal and plants species.

You have to visit the natural parks, as I assure you that the landscapes are absolutely breathtaking: Urkiola, Urdabai and Valderejo are just a few examples. The Basque Country is the perfect destination for those who have a lot of energy and love practicing sports during their holiday, such as hiking, golf, riding or any type of mountain sport. The steep Basque Coast is one of the areas in the Basque Country that you are not allowed to miss, as the views are spectacular; however, when you travel to the Basque Coast, don’t forget to bring a raincoat, as the fine rain is ever present.

Visiting the cities

The Basque Country is proud of its cities, which are great destinations for those who love the historical, cultural and archaeological heritages of Spain. San Sebastian, for example, should be one of your stops; the city was transformed into an aristocratic beach resort that touched its peak in the 19th century. The today’s atmosphere preserves the cosmopolite and exclusivist air of the past century, but it is a destination with beautiful beaches and excellent buildings that can represent the ideal tourist destination.

Bilbao is the largest city in the region and a very important industrial and economic center. It became famous thanks to the spectacular Guggenheim Museum, the Gothic Cathedral and the historic quarter that tell the story of its past. Last but not least, visit Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital city of the Basque Country, the city that hosts a very well preserved historical center and a place with a very active cultural life. Enjoy your holiday!
